Terra Cognita

a series by Juniper Jones

Terra Cognita means "Known Land" (roughly), and it's meant to describe five different stories set in the same world. It's our world, but slightly changed due to magic being ubiquitous from roughly the 1200s onward, as well as Christianity never reaching ascendance. Magic existed before that, but it became more accessible to those without the skill or ability to perform it themselves. Magical devices as simple as a potion and as complex as a multi-faceted crystal that acts like a smartphone are littered throughout these stories, and what it means for society. Presented here are bits of each of the five stories as they currently exist (or don't), along with character art, sketches, drabbles, and even some half-finished novels. Enjoy!

The Silver Hand

Set in the early 1300s in Scandinavia, this mystery follows a group of monster hunters known as The Silver Hand, led by the taciturn Ivarr. I generally describe it as a pre-canon Witcher story, back when witchers were in their heyday.

Amongst the Goblins & the Fishes

Set in an alternate, magically industrialized 1500s, this thriller traverses southern Europe, from Greece to Spain, following a young soldier named Wren. They have seen too much in the goblin wars, and now they are hunted by their government and their former commander.

Rapscallions

Set in the late 1800s in Albion (England), this story follows two Thieves Guild members, Lloyd and Darcy, as well as their more law-abiding pursuer, Roan. This was originally concieved of as two separate D&D games, and so I don't have much of a concrete plot yet.

New-Fallen Snow

Set in the 1990s in Chicago, this story follows two shapechangers, Snow, a selkie-style werewolf, and Ashka, a mask-transforming jackal. This is the earliest writing that I've included in Terra Cognita, and I only folded it in after that writing was done.

Bonds of Trust

Set in the 2020s in British Columbia, this romance/erotica novel has the longest word count of anything in Terra Cognita, and is my utmost pride. I commissioned several artists for various pieces, and even completed NaNoWriMo with it back in 2023. It is absolutely not safe for work, with several graphic sex scenes (my first!). It's shelved for now, but I expect to return to it again someday.
